New Obsession

This is the time of year for cookie baking, turkey eating and under the mistletoe kissing. Where there will definitely be some turkey eating on my to do list this year (no cookies, since I no longer have my own kitchen), also on my list is playing with this:

Sing to your hearts content. This little beauty contains such songs as Time after Time, Take on Me and of course the favorite Brick House.

I've been playing thing pretty much non stop the last few days that we had it. Sure, I should be doing some Christmas shopping, finishing that sock that's been WIP for months and months, or the Sweater for little baby that was born on Dec. 14 (Happy Birthday Little Baby!). Nah. I want to sing Blondie's "Call Me" and Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" and the Odds' "What I like about you"....I want to sing it all.

So if I'm too busy eating turkey and singing Karaoke Revolution to be posting in the near future, please excuse me and have a great holiday!!

No Place Like Home

We are all moved out! (mostly)

The weekend was spent moving all of our stuff from our 'old' house to my mom's house. Our 'new' house is not ready yet (only at foundation stage) so, the next 2 months will be spent living in my mom's basement.

I can't believe how much stuff we accumulated while living at the 'old' house for only a year and a half. We had started moving stuff weeks ago, and it seems that it just never ends. All the large furniture was moved on Friday (with u-haul rental truck). Saturday was more moving stuff and cleaning the house. Sunday was more of the same.

Now that it is Monday, I am soooo beat. There is still a few things at the 'old' house and there is a decent size delivery we gots to make for second hand donations and the food bank. This moving stuff will wind down soon (we loose possession of the house on Wednesday) and hopefully, I will be more rested in time for the long holiday weekend....

Who Lives in a Pineapple...

...Under the sea? This guy:

I made this cake by special request of my brother for his gf's birthday. My reward was being able to keep the pan. Spongebob has pink tie and socks because after 2 hours of icing the cake, I was tired and didn't want to do it anymore...

In other news, I still haven't been able to photograph my shrug and the baby sweater I'm working on, but will soon!

Also, Kat from Pinku recently put some Japanese crafting books up from her collection up on eBay. I won 3 of them! I am excited to recieve them. Definitely will post some pictures when they get here all the way from Japan!

The Weather Outside is Frightful...

So close to a brown Chistmas! It's been snowing non stop for the past few days. This morning I woke up to a blanket of snow and had to shovel off a weekend's worth of snow off my car. People are still arriving to work because the traffic out there is CRAZY!

Anyways, I figured I'd post a little one, since I have a few minutes, and I haven't posted in a while. I hope to have pictures up soon.

I finally finished the shrug! So exciting. I think that is the biggest project I have every actually finished. It ended up a little on the big side, so I think if I ever make it again, smaller needles and shorter sleeves.

I've also started a second project. There's a baby due on Christmas, so I thought I would try my hand at a baby sweater. I didnt' want to do anything too complicated and I had some
KnitPicks Color Your Own sock yarn I had already colored in a self-striping fashion of a Sweet Tart colorway. I'm not really a sock knitter (yet?) so I decided to use this yarn for Last-Minute Stripes Pullover. I've finished the front and a sleeve, and I'm excited to do the remainder 2 pieces. I'll have to block them (my first attempt) and run them through the water forsure, because while I was knitting, the color was coming off onto my hands...so we'll have to see!

Will post pictures soon!

11.24.2005

6 Episodes of Desparate Housewives Season 1 on DVD brings...

...only 3 inches of turtleneck to an almost 2 month old turtleneck shrug.

Man, I am SUCH a slow knitter. It's not like I stopped knitting because I was so captivated, I was knitting for at least 85% of the time. My goodness. There goes my chances of winning fastest knitter in the world.

I'll have pictures when I finish the shrug. At the rate I am going, I'll be lucky if I'm done by Christmas...

11.15.2005

Sleeves

Now for some actual knitting content...

I'm working onthe Turtleneck Shrug from ScarfStyle. This sleeve took me a little over a month to complete:

This one however...

took me 2 days so far, and I'm already a little over half way done. What the heck? What have I been doing for the last month?

11.11.2005

SOLD!

Our house is sold! I can't believe how quick...only one week on the market! Now we have the piece of mind and just have to wait for our new house to be finished building. However, the new owners want in before Christmas and our new house isn't ready until perhaps February, so this means that we are going to live with my parents for a couple of months...

11.10.2005

1 hour 39 minutes...

to go until my week off! Then to my new job! Yay!

(and there's an offer to buy our house! hopefully that pans through....)

So many life changing events lately...

11.09.2005

Last Day

Tomorrow is my last day at my job. I'll have one week off before I start my new job! I signed the offer papers today and boy am I excited! I actually get my own office...

Don't you just love day after Halloween sales?

Oh and please excuse Daisey. For some reason she anticipates the flash on the camera and always squints. She's squinty girl. I have such a hard time getting a clear picture of her not squinting.

Sweet Skills

Numchuk skills, hacking skills, drawing skills, but especially....
Pumpkin Carving Skills
GAWD!
We attended the Third Annual Pumpkin Carving Potluck hosted by TD and BH on Saturday. There was great food, greater company and GIANT pumpkins. This Napoleon Dynamite pumpkin was HUGE! I could fit my head in the hole I cut out in the top. I think someone took a picture too...
A Hards Day's Work Getting Out the Pumpkin Guts
A great jorb done by all. I was interested to see how many of the kids would recognize who the pumpkin was carved as. Too bad I couldn't find any candles to put in the pumpkins until the last 20 minutes of trick or treating open house...
Boo.
Everyones hard work pays off!

Hallo My Friend!

My new friend is a Louet S10. Unfortunately it is on loan and I only have it up to Sunday. Then I have to return it to the weaver's guild. So sad. I'm trying to spin as much as possible, but I'm running out of time. I'm getting better though -- I've managed to spin even sock weight (sport?) yarn. The next thing I want to try is to dye roving first before spinning or ply with thread...

In other crafty news, I also tried my hand at coloring some selfstriping yarn. I would like to make a pair of socks with it. It's the knitpicks dye your own sock yarn. It is very soft! I should probably finish the sock (singular) I started way back...I'm not a fan of double point needles...

Yarn Soup

On a side note. I had a job interview yesterday. Here's me in the 'monkey suit'. I bought the suit especially for the interview...

I actually look like a professional...haha.

Meme!

My first one!

Okay -- here's how it goes: Google "(yourname) needs" and post the first 10 results. My name is not very popular, so I was interested in seeing the results:

1. The esteemed Dr. Elaina needs players' intellect, perseverance and ingenuity tohelp her reconstruct Dr. Brain's brain.
2. Anyway, go to Google and type in "Elaina wants" and "Elaina needs" and post threeresults of each. (it seems another blogger with the name Elaina)
3. It is well noted that Elaina needs to get out more.
4. Oops, gotta go - Elaina needs to feed me her animal crackers!
5. Elaina needs to mind her own business, but doesn’t know how to.
6. “Elaina needs to go back too…” Frank stopped before telling them her problem.
7. "Elaina needs medical attention," she said.
8. Elaina needs a room view profile.
9. Elaina needs to occupy PRECISELY the same space As her sister!
10. (This one is not so PG -- like not at all, so if you really want to know, please feel free to google it and see for yourself.)

Weird.

Anybody home?

Yah, I'm home. Sorry for the lack of posts -- I try to average at least once a week, but it's been a hectic few days.

Finished fixing the house. All the nicks and scratches, all fixed. Someone came to see the house yesterday, so cleaning, organizing was in full gear. My house has never been so clean! Makes feel bad that we're selling it away.

I also managed to borrow a spinning wheel from spinning class. We are allowed to take them home for the duration of the class. So for the next 2 weeks, I get to have a spinning wheel! I'm going to try to spin as much as possible because I can't really get a wheel of my own now, and if I can sell some of the yarn (if I get good enough), I can put it towards my spinning wheel fund.

I know I said prior that I didn't like the Louet and wanted to try the Ashford Traditional. I changed my mind. I tried the Ashford on Sunday, and didn't like it. at. all. So I sucked it up and tried the Louet S10. I love it. I don't know what I was thinking the first time I used it and didn't like it. On Sunday, when I tried it again, I was able to actually spin even sized singled. I have never done that before. I filled up a spool and I'm setting the twist on it as we speak. I hope to have pictures soon. Now all I can think of is spinning on that wheel...

Easy Like a Sunday Morn

They haven't even been up for an hour yet, but I guess Milo and Daisey are resting up for today's turkey dinner!

10.07.2005

To do List (In technicolor!)

Honestly, I'm only going to talk about 2 & 3 on the list because that's all the pics I gots for now:

2. I didn't finish up the shirt I started, but started and finished the one I wanted to do, and it didn't turn out to be a hoodie. I'm hoping to sell it on ebay, and it'll either go towards my spinning wheel fund, or the 'my new house needs central vacuum' fund. I know the pocket is a little lopsided, but it adds to the character, right? =P

What do you think?? Would it sell?
3. My plied yarn. My first plied yarn. It was very nice in it's natural color, but I like to dye, and I like bright colored yarns. So, I died it with some icing dye I had.

Before
After
Sorry the pictures aren't that great, but I have this bad habit of taking pictures late at night in a dark room.
Guess that's it for now!! For my fellow Canadians, have a great long turkey filled weekend!

10.03.2005

Spinster

I'm taking a spinning class. It's with the Edmonton Weavers Guild. My first class was yesterday. I wasn't sure what to expect. I took the class to play learn to use the spinning wheels.

First, of course, was the lesson on a spindle. I've had experience on a spindle (albeit not very good on a spindle) so I think I did okay. Then we learned how to wash raw wool and then the SPINNING ON A WHEEL. This is going to sound nerdy, but I was SO EXCITED!

They had 3 types of wheels -- 1 Ashford Traditional, a few Louets (I think S10), and a few Lendrums. I used a Lendrum. It was okay. I liked the way it was set up, but didn't like that it doesn't like thick yarn. I love to use thick yarn, so I like to make it. I used the Louet to ply my worsted weight singles to create plied bulky, and didn't like it at all. I read up that you can buy size kits for the Ashford Traditional, so I plan to use it next class to see how I like it, or else it looks like Lendrum -- when I'm ready for a wheel, of course. (That means that I'm going to have to raise the money on eBay, or if I'm lucky, our house will sell for more than I thought and I can use some of that....but I'm just dreaming.)

It was fun. I filled up 2 bobbins and learned to ply them. I dyed it last night before I went to bed. I think the fleece that we spun was mohair. It's soft and looks hairy. I hope to have pictures soon.

Happy Monday!

10.02.2005

To Do List:

  1. make halloween costumes for Milo(frog?) and Daisey(bunny?)
  2. sew up some diy shirts (fix the one started, start new one -- planned hoodie)
  3. dye plied yarn, spun from spinning class
  4. seam up knitted armwarmers
  5. finish those doggy pjs that have been supposed to be up in the shop a while ago
  6. photocopy japanese magazine's sewing patterns -- because they print up 6 different patterns overlapping each other on one large sheet of paper (in conjunction with making halloween costumes -- the patterns are from this book)
  7. fix nicks in hardwood floor (must make house look saleable)
  8. fix nicks in cupboards courtesy of Milo demanding treats
  9. fix nicks in baseboards (so we can sell the house)
  10. wash fleece for spinning class

9.27.2005

*cough*

My poor Milo has a cold. I guess I left the window open for too long on Sunday, and it got a little chilly in the house. Milo was honking a dog cough by suppertime. He's getting better; but the honk soon turned into a flemmy sort of wheeze. Poor Milo. Everytime he get's into a coughing fit, Daisey is so concerned, dropping everything that she is doing to make sure Milo is okay.

Now his cough has surpressed into the occassional tickle in his throat. He seems much better. He must have gotten some much needed sleep yesterday while I was at work. I made sure he was tucked warmly in a blanket before I left.

DIY afghan hook.

I'm working on a doggy sweater for Daisey right now. According to the book, it's like finger knitting or something, but I can't fit that many stitches on my little hands. After some examination, I concluded that a afghan hook would be most advantagous for this particular project.

I'm using the Patons Upcountry for the sweater, which I really really like, and am really really disappointed that it is discontinued. Anyways, because of the bulkiness of the yarn, I figured a good size of hook would be a size 15/P. I don't think there is such thing as a size P afghan hook. I have a size J. Tried with that one. The stitches were way to tight and the fabric ended up being very stiff. I tried with just a size P crochet hook. The stitches don't fit. They fall off the ends.

So, last night I ponder on how I'm going to make myself a size P afghan hook. I thought about cutting the end of a crochet hook and crazy gluing it onto a size 15 knitting needle...that seemed to be the best solution.

Then, I got it! I'll take my size 15 needle, roast it over the hot stove like a rottiserie, just to be the plastic of the needle pliable, and mold accordingly. I thought of this at 10pm last night. I had to try it. Turn on the stove and hovered over it like I was roasting a marshmallow.

I was waiting for something to go wrong -- melt the plastic all over my nice ceramic stove, catch the plastic on fire, expose myself and my family to toxic fumes from the heating of the plastic. Or what if it didnt work?

About 3-4 minutes into the roasting, I give the tip of the needle a bend. It was finally starting to go. Soon, I was able to heat/mold the needle into what I wanted, and got myself a size P/15 afghan hook! Used it right away. Quite happy with the result. YAY!

There will be some pictures soon.

Now I just need to get my hands on more Upcountry...somehow.

I donated a sweater to the cause. You can see it at Etsy here.

It's somebody's happy birthday today. He's 3 years old. I think it's 21 in dog years. He's old enough to go to Vegas now. *tear* My little boy is all grown up.

We celebrated with some doggy cupcakes. Milo and Daisey had the time of their lives. I couldn't get a picture of Milo with his cupcake in time:

Update!

This post is going to have several topics which I have managed to avoid the past couple of weeks:

1. Crafting/ Shop stuff.
2. Gas Prices.
3. Weekend Bdays Celebrations

So, here we go:

1. Crafting

After a little bit of a crafty hiatus. I feel that I am motivated enough to get the ball rolling again. (I hope)

I got some(4 to be exact) lovely japanese craft-make-doggy-costume/clothes-book for my birthday, and I am aching to make some stuff for the doggies. I'm hoping to get some dog costumes out there for the halloweening.

I did finish that one-skien-wonder. I actually finished it not long after I had posted it. I'm just alittle slow with the postings on the internets.

I'm also going to venture into the land of armwarmers. My bro's gf had requested a pair and I had never made them before. I basically measured my hands (we have the same sized hands-- how convient!) and tried to figure out how many rows and stitches according to the gauge of the yarn. So basically, it ended up being a tube with a thumb hole. But it turned out well, and I'm thinking of making more of the site and perhaps a pair for myself.

Which brings me to...

2. Gas Prices

The pair for myself is because they would make good knitting gloves in the out of doors as fall/autumn is now quickly approaching. With gas prices over $1/L and threatening to be $1.20/L, I think I might be starting to take the bus to the office. There's no way I should be paying that much for gas and than another $4-$6 for parking per day depending where I can find parking. It must be the bus. I think.

3. Weekend Birthday Celebrations

Now, I say 'celebrations' because it wasn't just my birthday. Officially, the party was for TD, who's actual bday was last Saturday. Mine had already past and there's something about not celebrating a birthday after the actual birthday because of bad luck.

We had a big bbq, I made some ricekrispie maki/sushi, monkey pops, and candy apples. I am obsessed with making candy apples. They are so easy/fun to make. Too bad I don't like to eat them.

We also had the obligatory burgers and hotdogs, and I cheated and ordered 100 sticks each of chicken and beef satay with peanut sauce. SO GOOD!

I almost forgot! We also rented a jumpy gym in the shape of a boxing ring, and for a little extra, we were able to rent giant boxing gloves as well. That was fun. The poor kids in the neighborhood were so envious! haha.

And it took me almost a week. Here I present....

One Skein Wonder from Glampyre. I'm almost done! Stitch up the one sde and do the ribbing around. Done and done! So excited! I've never really finished anything like this before. I have a third of a sweater done from last year -- I don't think I'll ever attempt a sweater again. But this is different. One skein. Easy. Will post pics when finished. (just like will post pics of booties when finished)

Here kitty kitty kitty

There's something visiting my backyard.

We built our house last year and haven't been able to put the grass in yet. As a result, the weeds are growing in the dirt...and they are growing high.

I am not a cat person, and I don't know much about cats, but I'm assuming that cats like to play in tall grass and the like?

This is the neighbor's cat. I think it's a she, but I'm not entirely sure. So, for the sake of this entry, kitty will be a 'she'.

She has been visiting everytime she gets out of her house, I think. Kitty enjoys it in our backyard. I much rather have her backyard -- her grass has already been put down, and her garage has already been put up.

She skulks in the grass. She also seems to like to play ninja and pounce on butterflies and grasshoppers. I'm sure she's done at least one evasive roll.

And when she realizes that I'm watching, she'll sit and start meowing at me.

"Meow meow meow meow meow"*

Then she gets fed up and leaves.

Then she comes back a couple of minutes later to play ninja some more.

She drives Milo and Daisey crazy.

*Translation: "Hey! You! What you lookin' at? You wanna fight?! Don't make get all ninja on your butt!"

ETA: Just found out Kitty's name is Oscar. So kitty is a boy. My bad.

Done and done!

Well, almost.

The revamped site is up! Let me know what you think!

Some of the links on the inventory pages aren't working (the aboutus link, the contacts link) I will fix those tomorrow as I am super tired right now.

And there are only Carolyn's stuff posted up at this point. My computer is on the fritz and I can't transfer pictures of my stuff. Hopefully I can fix it soon.

Other then that, go ahead and shop it up!!

YAY!

Best time for the exercise

Is apparently 6:30 in the morning. If I try to do it when they are awake, Milo is okay, but Daisey is all up in my face and eating my hair. Oh, and also yanking the cuffs of my pants.

But 6:30, the house is quiet. You can walk around, make a moderate amount of noise, even make breakfast and there will be no pugs scampering around.

They are so lazy.

At about 8 however, they start to come to life -- well, only Daisey. Milo likes to lay in bed until noon if he is allowed to.

I've never had such a quiet session of the exercise. I guess this means I will have to wake up that early from now on. *sigh*

Etsy

I've started to list stuff on www.etsy.com. Etsy is like ebay, except everything is (supposed to be) handmade, and it's not really an auction. It's like the "buy it now" on ebay. It's neat! I think it's only been around for a month or so, but we'll see how it goes over there!

I've almost finished the matching booties to the green baby hat (picture to follow). I just have to stitch them up and add on the strap. YAY!

Oh, and you've probably noticed that the shop is gone. I'm working on a new design. I've kind learned how to .css it up, so it's going slowly. I think all I've gots left is to rephotograph and list all the items that are to be for sale. I still want to start making clothes for the peoples -- skirts, reconstructed tops, etc etc. I really want to make a skirt...perhaps this weekend? I would like to finish the site first, though.

And check out this guy:

He puts his arm up on the window like he's driving a pickup truck or something and then 'falls asleep at the wheel'. What a guy...

Winded!

It's Saturday, about noon time. I should be at the farmer's market right now selling my 'wares'. But I'm home.

Why? Because it's CRAZY windy out there. Everything started pretty okay. The tent set up easy, laid the stuff out onto the table and then it started. The wind kept blowing and blowing.

The neighbors tent broke it was so windy. Our tent was picked up and the 35lb weight holding it down flew 20 feet up in the air and landed somewhere. We were lucky no one was hurt.

So we took the tent down. At this time we hear that the people running the market was having a meeting on whether or not to shut the market down. We wanted to see how we do without the tent.

I just kept lying on the stuff so it wouldn't blow away. Then stuff blew away. Then we packed up and left.

*sigh*

(on a side note: there was some potential there as I was only there for 2 hours and made a nice sum, so yay for that)

Revamp?

I'm thinking about revamping the shop site. Hmm...

I want it to be better designed, better layout, better looking (um, NICER looking?).

It'll be alot of work. I won't be able to start until after this weekend with the market and all. I'll also have to temporarily take down the shop site.

Have I mentioned that it'll be alot of work?

I'll have to think about this one.

Second Time 'Round

I will be at the City Centre Market this Saturday. Hopefully it'll go better than the last time.

Wish me luck.

Baby knitting

There's a baby due in about a week. That, of course, means that there is some serious knitting that needs to be in the goings on.

This is for that baby. This is the umbilical cord hat from Stitch n Bitch book.
I can't believe how cute this hat is. So funny!
This is my first baby thing that I have every knitted. The majority of knitted things that I have knitted were dog sweaters. Finally something for the little humans.

There will be matching booties in the works. I'll post those when I am done.=)
For fun:

I love the expression on Milo's face.

Purty!

I saw something I had never seen before today. And it was just outside my living room window.

Taken from my back door (then pieced together like a frankenstein):

An entire rainbow...

Sampler!

I gots my Sampler yesterday. This was my first sampler. I had contributed 61 dog bone toys for the Summer Sampler and this was my reward!

I got lots of cool stuff: notebook from The Small Object, potholders from Sew Unique, buttons from Miss Chief Productions, and so much more.
I even got some nice emails from Angela and Trish about my dog bone toys that I had contributed. I'm so glad that their dogs like them! YAY!

Farmer's Market

As I had said before, I was denied a spot for the farmer's market that I had applied for. This market is HUGE! I think the biggest of it's kind in western Canada. They apparently had reached their market share percentage of the products I was offering (mostly purses and doggy clothes). So I started to look for alternative markets to participate in.

I soon found the Sherwood Park farmer's market. It was run by the summer students at the Chamber of Commerce and took place because locals wanted a farmer's market on a Saturday (the regualr one is on Wednesday's). Anyways, I applied for this one too and was accepted after a couple of hours.

This market is SMALL. Where the St. Albert's one had a hundred or so stalls, this one had a max of 25 and I think only like 15 showedup. Needless to say, I didn't do as well as I hoped. Much of my product was aimed at the teen to late 20's group. I counted 2 teens the whole day we were there. Out of 5 hours, 2 teens. I would guess about 85% of the people that visited were over the age of 40. This was the wrong demographic.

I have not lost hope. I just need to get into the markets that have the Gen X and younger traffic. It was good practice for me today. I know what to do for next time when I hit the bigger markets.

I forgot my camera, so no pics. But next time.

I do feel relieved though. For once I don't feel like I have to sit at the sewing machine because I don't have enough of something.

I think I'm going to put in the online shop the stuff that I didn't get to sell today. Hopefully I'll be able to do this over the next couple of days.

I'm pooped. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I'm looking at a couple of other options. Cross your fingers for me...
I didn't get into the farmer's market I applied for. I am so sad.

*sigh*

Pooped!

And not the yucky dog kind.

It's been a busy busy weekend. And it all went by sooooo fast. For some reason, I can't remember what I did on Friday. I don't remember that day at all.

Oh, wait. I remember. I worked on some pillowcase tops. Then that evening I accompanied my mom to a wedding because my dad is out of town. It was nice. The bride even made her own cake! I wish I took pictures....

Saturday, we went to the farmer's market that I had applied to. It was an outdoors event, I think the largest of its kind in Western Canada. HUGE! So many things to see. Very nice!

Today I sewed some more. Here's a taste of what I have been working on the past couple of days.

Still waiting for that letter....I wish it would hurry up. Now I'm starting to second guess that I won't get it...

*sigh*

New Journal Home!

Here it is in all it's new journal glory. Now, it's not much to look at for now, but as I learn how to manipulate the code, perhaps it'll get better....I hope.

For those who are interested in looking at the old stuff from the other page, before I started to use blogger, there's a link at the bottom of the side bar called 'older entries' and that will take you right to the older stuff.

Just as an update with my crazy busy crafting: I'm up to 18 purses, and I'm going to start the dog clothes right away. I have yet to receive my confirmation for the market. I'm sure I'll get it soon. I mean, there's only one week left. I plan to visit the market tomorrow (as it is the first day running) to get a feel for things.

Well, back to work. Wait. Breakfast first. Then more sewing.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!
